Every year on August 29, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of Ukraine, who died in the struggle for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. This day was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated August 23, 2019 No. 621 to perpetuate the heroism of servicemen and volunteers who gave their lives for their homeland, as a reminder of one of the bloodiest events of the war in eastern Ukraine – The Ilovaisk tragedy.
On August 29, 2014, during the withdrawal of ATO forces from the encirclement near Ilovaisk, the Russian leadership violated the agreement and the enemy armed forces fired at close range with heavy weapons on a convoy of Ukrainian soldiers. Such treacherous killing is qualified by international humanitarian law as a war crime. Then 366 Ukrainian soldiers died, 429 were wounded, 158 went missing, 300 were captured.
The "green corridor" is deadly for our defenders. ran through fields of sunflowers. It was under them that hundreds of Ukrainians laid down their lives on the altar of freedom in the fight against the enemy, died in the fight for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. So the symbol of the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine became the sunflower flower. 🌻
